Choosing new materials for your roof can be an experience that provokes a lot of deep thought. While one option may present several pros, it can offer just as many cons. When you're faced with huge decisions like these, it's essential to consider the good, bad, and the ugly.

Metal roofing is a popular and long-lasting option for homeowners and businesses, and they aren't only made for commercial establishments and barns. In fact, a metal roofing option that's sparked the interest of many homeowners is Decra tile. If you find the look of a traditional metal roof boring or unattractive, Decra may be the option you're looking for. This roofing style has affordable and unique options, making it increasingly popular among homeowners. Like every other roof choice, however, it does have positive and potentially negative characteristics.

Here at RoofCrafters, we've been installing and replacing metal roofs for three decades. We can provide a wealth of information just for you regarding metal roofing because we've been working with it for so long! This article will discuss every pro and con of Decra metal roofing. By the end, you'll know exactly what to look out for when considering this material for your roof. But first, we'll quickly go over what Decra metal roofing is. Let's start!

What is Decra Metal Roofing?

Decra roofing is a metal alternative to standard asphalt or wooden shingles. Don't get Decra confused with a traditional metal roofing system, though!

Decra panels aren't the substantial metal panels that are usually found on barns and commercial buildings. The long metal sheets seen on those establishments are most likely made of corrugated or standing seam metals. Alternatively, Decra metal roofing is made up of small rectangular panels, similar to asphalt shingles. These panels are made of robust and durable steel and can be stamped to mimic just about any roof style, including tile and shingles.

There are five types of Decra metal roofing.

1. Decra Tile

How is Decra Metal Roofing Made?

This roofing type is created by following a strict process that turns various materials into the tiles themselves. Metal panels are coated with small stones to create an admirable stone-coated steel roof that offers excellent curb appeal. Every Decra roofing product starts with a piece of steel that is coated with an aluminum-zinc alloy. This precise alloy formula gives Decra steel an average lifespan of up to 4 times that of traditional galvanized steel, which is incredibly impressive.

After that, an acrylic resin is applied to both sides of the coated steel. The resin, which is tinted brown, is specially formulated to protect against fingerprints and scuffing while handling the product. Next, another layer of durable acrylic resin is added.

The resin acts as a base coat adhesive for the external layer of Decra shingles, which are small stone granules. The granules are then applied to the coated steel sheets, giving the Decra panels the look they're known for, gleaming with unique and eye-catching colors and textures!

To top it off, an overglaze is applied to the tiny stones externally to keep them from wearing away quicker during handling or general use. The last step is molding and stamping the steel sheets in decorative panels that mimic the look of tile or shingles!

The Pros of Decra Metal Roofing

Now that you have a great idea of what this roofing type is, let's get into the fun part- the benefits it offers! Every roof has its own unique perks and Decra is no exception.

Increased Curb Appeal

The roof is one of the most noticeable elements of your home. Think of it like this- comparing a home with a flat, old roof and a house with a bright and unique roof, which would you assume is more valuable? Aesthetics matter and Decra metal roofing is an attractive option if you want to "wow" your neighbors or even potential buyers of your home.

Lower Insurance

Did you know that stone-coated metal shingles are fire-resistant? Because of that, they have the potential to lower the price of your insurance, depending on your policy. Checking the specifics of your own will help you decide if that's your case.

Environmentally Friendly

Metal roofing is favored for being environmentally friendly from the time of being made until the end of its life. Decra roofing is also recyclable! With sustainability being a rising concern among homeowners, this option presents an opportunity to help the environment while you're getting a new roof.

A Cooler Home

With proper installation, Decra roofing has shown to lower attic temps. Homes with asphalt shingles installed on them can get up to around 150 degrees, while homes with stone-coated steel can get up to about 90.

Resistant to the Elements

We've all learned that weather, no matter how harsh, can drastically affect your roof over time. Hail, rain, and wind damage are incredibly widespread and can be hard to prevent, but starting with a solid roof can decrease your chances of getting hit with costly repair charges. Decra roofing is one of the most durable options on the market and lasts considerably longer than most other roof types.

The Cons of Decra Metal Roofing

Knowing the cons of any roofing material you consider is just as important as learning the pros. So, what are the potential drawbacks of Decra metal roofing?

Higher Up-Front Cost

Even though Decra roofing isn't the most expensive choice out there, it still isn't the cheapest, either. You do get what you pay for, however. The long lifespan and little to no maintenance is appealing to a lot of homeowners, but if you have a smaller budget, there may be better options for you and your home.

Not Suitable for DIYs

If you're a handi-person and like working with your hands and making your own repairs, this roof option may not be your best bet. Decra roofing installation is nothing short of a considerable task and can't be compared to installing other roof types, like asphalt shingles. You'll need special tools, equipment, and skill sets to be able to pull off installing and repairing this roof type.

Noisier

Depending on how your roof was installed, it may be a little louder when it rains or hails compared to other roof types. This is usually minimal, though, and there haven't been a ton of complaints about noise. Some materials can be placed during installation to help soundproof the roof more.
